Mamoru Hosoda /jap. 細田, 守 (Nachname, Vorname, in Kanji) wurde am 19. September 1967 in Nakaniikawa, Toyama (Japan) geboren und besuchte die Hochschule für Kunst in Kanazawa. Nach dem Abschluss in Ölmalerei folgte 1991 sein Beitritt zu Toei Eiga (heute: Toei Animation).
Zunächst arbeitete er an einigen TV-Serien, bis er schließlich bei Anime-Spielfilmen wie Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game, One Piece: Omatsuri Danshaku to Himitsu no Shima und dem Kurzfilm Superflat Monogram mitwirkte.
2005 trennte er sich von Toei Animation.
Hosoda war dann beim Studio Ghibli als Regisseur für den Film Das wandelnde Schloss im Gespräch (2002-06-14 - Hosoda Leaves Ghibli, 2002-08-12 - Miyazaki to Direct Howl?), was dann allerdings doch Hayao Miyazaki übernahm.
2006 gewann sein Film Das Mädchen, das durch die Zeit sprang, einige wichtige Auszeichnungen.
